 Was researching the topic of death for apostasy just now and Allah Herself answered. 

 

Verily, those who believed and then disbelieved,
then believed and then disbelieved and increased in disbelief,
never will Allah forgive them nor will He guide them to a right way.

Surah An-Nisa 4:137

 

I found some articles online on the topic.  The idea that people are punished for leaving Islam quietly and without bitterness is against the religion.  One must distinguish between minor and major apostasy.  Sadly, the Islamic nations are punishing their people as a way to exert their control over them.  So many have died because their  governments fail to practice the true laws as given by God and the Mercy we Muslims are supposed to fill the world with.
